Orange Spanish Fly Perdigon by Riversfly
Why is this such an effective fly?
It is due to the great reproductive capacity of these small freshwater shrimp, totaling 20,000 fry per year in ideal conditions per pair.
Fish hunt them for food.
The beauty of fly fishing with Orange Spanish Fly is that you can use them at any time of year. They are always available as fish food, even when the availability of other insects is limited.
They are an ideal imitation to use during non-hatching periods of early spring and low light conditions, very early in the morning and late in the evening. They are good generalist shrimp patterns for catching fish all over the world. Newly hatched fry look like smaller versions of the adults. As the young grow they shed their skin (exoskeleton) five to nine times before reaching adulthood. Adults continue to shed another 15 to 20 times during their lifetime as they grow. Time periods between molts can be from three days to around 40 days. It depends on the species, food availability, and water temperature. Most species mate and lay eggs anytime between spring and late summer from one to fifteen times in the same season. The frequency again depends on the species, food availability, and water temperature. The normal lifespan of a small freshwater shrimp is normally one year, but they can live for two years.
Shrimp spend their entire lives under the surface of the water. There is no pupal stage or hatching of any kind.
